Tap to Pay on iPhone: accept in-person payments with the Commas iOS app

Tap to Pay turns your iPhone into a payment terminal. Customers can pay you in person by tapping their card, Apple Pay or another digital wallet on your phone. You don't need a card reader or any extra hardware.

What you can use it for

  • Selling in person

  • Taking payments at events

  • Closing customers face-to-face

  • Accepting a payment anywhere, with just your iPhone

What you need

  • An iPhone with the latest version of the Commas iOS app

  • Tap to Pay enabled on your Commas account

  • At least one product in your product catalog

How to take a payment

  1. Update the Commas app to the latest version from the App Store.

  2. Open the app and go to your product catalog.

  3. Find the product you're selling. Next to the Copy Payment Link button, tap the Tap icon.

  4. Hand your iPhone toward your customer, or hold it near their card or phone.

  5. Your customer taps their card, Apple Pay or digital wallet on the top of your iPhone.

  6. Wait for the confirmation on screen. The payment is complete.

Where the payment goes

A Tap to Pay payment processes through Commas just like a payment link. It shows in your Transactions with your other sales and is paid out on your normal payout schedule. Refunds work the same way as for any other Commas payment.

Troubleshooting

  • I don't see the Tap icon. Update the Commas app to the latest version and reopen it. If the icon still isn't there, Tap to Pay may not be enabled on your account yet. Contact us through chat and we'll check it for you.

  • The customer's tap didn't go through. Ask them to hold their card or phone steady near the top of your iPhone until the screen confirms, or try a different card or wallet.

  • I use an Android phone. Tap to Pay is currently available on the Commas iOS app for iPhone. You can still accept payments anywhere by sharing your payment link.
